NMMU 2nd Year Social Work Students Shifting the Lens of Community Development

Ikhala Trust was approached by the Social Work Department at NMMU in 2015 to introduce Asset Based Community Development to their 2nd year social work students with the purpose of changing the way in which they conducted community ‘needs’ assessments as part of their community development module.

A courageous step indeed and as a consequence of the outcome the University decided that they wished to continue offering ABCD to their new 2md year students and the the rest is history.  84 students and their supervisors participated in a 1-day ABCD fundamentals and 3 consecutive afternoon sessions to do practical mapping exercises that would prepare them for their practice in communities.  The students embraced the ‘new approach’ with enthusiasm and we look forward to the outcome of their mapping exercises and appreciative enquiry.
